Watford Mencap campaigns against learning disability hate crime

During Learning Disability Week 2011 (June20-26) Watford Mencap joined in with national Mencap’s campaign against disability hate crime. Stand by me is a three year campaign that will challenge the police, the criminal justice system and the courts to end hate crime against people with a learning disability.

Watford Mencap staff and volunteers took to the streets to ask members of the public to stand by people with a learning disabitlty and sign a petition to put an end to disabitlty hate crime. Campaigning at the Harlequin, Rickmansworth Station and on Rickmansworth High Street, over 500 signatures were collected. These will now be presented to local police forces asking them to look at the way they deal with disabitlty hate crime.

As well as campaigning, Watford Mencap volunteers also held a collection and managed to raise £145.
